Black and White thinking.
This portrait reflects a familiar moment in my studio, sitting in front of an empty canvas and thinking about whether to begin. Around the figure, black and white swirls move through the space, representing the looping thoughts that often accompany the creative process.
The figure and much of the scene are painted in cool blue and monochrome tones, reflecting the quiet, reflective mood of that moment. In contrast, the palette holds rich yellows and oranges waiting to be used. These colours represent the possibilities that exist beyond doubt, and the persistence it takes for me to begin anyway.
